Another more realistic, although
fun mod in Half-Life is Global
Warfare. Global Warfare is a team deathmatch mod that involves two
different teams, the Arab Liberation Forces and the United Nations. Basically,
you have a bunch of fanatics from the Middle East against the unified
United Nations. What makes Global Warfare so different than your typical
mod is the realistic objectives, and different pace from other mods.
The
graphics in GW are very smooth and gentle. What I mean by this is that
the game tends to "roll" you along like marble, rather than
jagged animations or fast-paced gameplay. The graphics are very smooth
and rounded in GW, with hardly any sharp edges or changings patterns.
This is both good and bad as maps tend to get bland, while holding a certain
resilience inside. Player models are ok, but mostly everyone looks the
same. Arabs look like Middle Easterners, and United Nations guys look
like American soldiers. Weapons are designed well, but look too flaky
and fake. Stingers and LAW Rocket Launchers, plus additional weapons are
designed well, but everything in this game lacks detail.
Sound is somewhat better
since certain levels tend to have musical themes. For example, on this
one map, there's an Arab palace with a radio on. You can hear the Arabian
music in the background, and it's perfect for all the blood spattering
action going on. Guns tend to have hollowed shooting sounds, rather than
being more pronounced. You can kind of tell that everything was recorded
from a distance, but don't let these things scare you. Global Warfare
is a great mod.
Unlike
your typical modification, Global Warfare has a very unique reinforcements
situation. In order to start fighting on a map, you must board a transportation
vehicle to get to the battlefield. Basically, each team has a spawn, then
you press the "use" button to board the vehicle, and it takes
you to the battlezone. Each landing area is protected by spawn guns, but
each team has a stinger which they can use to shoot down helicopters.
Basically, if your team's helicopter/APC is destroyed by a stinger/APC,
you can't respawn until a new one generates. This creates secondary objectives
on maps, because once a transportation vehicle is destroyed, you can kill
the rest of the team, and the round ends. GW also has objectives that
differ from most maps. For example, one cool map involves a bridge where
the UN must "laser target" the bridge for so many seconds, and
an air raid will occur. This is very realistic as the military does laser
targets for bombing raids. Plus, it makes it more exciting because a laser
target gives away your position, and makes you an easy target for your
enemies. Gameplay becomes very intense in GW, but it can also be a bore
if you're constantly dieing.
There's
plenty of classes, weapons, and things to occupy your mind. You can use
rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns, shotguns, pistols, and even knives
to eliminate your enemies. Mines are on the list, and are commonly used
to pluck enemies entering tight tunnels. Global Warfare is a great combination
of smooth gameplay, teamwork, and trying to succeed at your objectives.
The main problem is that the community is small. Not many people know
about this MOD, so I recommend you try it out. There's a few servers,
but the actual player community is very, very small. Lag isn't an issue,
but the lack of servers/players may hinder your playing time. Try this
mod out, it's a definite change in pace over your typical non-realistic
John Woo film.

TIPS
- Killing
an enemy is easy in GW. Try to connect as many body shots as possible
since it's the most efficient way to killing an enemy.
- If you're
an engineer, plant mines in key positions where the enemy often travels.
A mine placed in a key position can easily rack up more kills than a
sniper!
- If you
want to destroy the enemy's opposing transport, you need teamwork. Always
have someone cover you because you cannot switch to another weapon while
carrying a LAW or STINGER.
- If an
enemy is chasing you, and you're holding a Stinger, drop the stinger
(by pressing "g"), and than shoot him in haste.
- Camping
isn't too useful in GW. Almost any person with a gun can take out a
camper, and you become more inaccurate if you try jumping around.
- Silenced
weapons are very effective. Use the PDW if you want to take some targets
out without noticing your presence.
- The Colt
1911 is probably the pistol with the most damage per bullet. Use it
wisely, but caution on the short 7 round clip.
- The SPAS
shotgun is one of the few guns that can kill in one shell. Keep shooting
your enemy until he dies, there is a delay between each shot.
- If you
are the UN on a defensive map, plant mines around the defensive target.
It's always a nuisance to your opponent to get exploded by a mine right
when he's about to plant C4.
- If you
are lasering the bridge as a UN Radioman, find a spot where your laser
will be least noticeable. Some key spots is hiding your laser behind
a railing, and climbing under the bridge, and then targeting it.
- A LAW
cannot destroy a helictoper, and a Stinger cannot be shot at a APC.
Remember that.
- To heal
another player, walk next to them and select the Medkit (if you have
it equipped). It will automatically heal the other player if he has
less than 100 health.
