One of the
newest mods out there about the Vietnam War is Tour
of Duty. You see, many programming teams never bothered to take the
time out to develop a Vietnam-based mod since it would take too much time
and resources to make. However, a group decided to do so and they have
created a very fun mod that almost anyone can play.
The
advantage of being released as a unique mod is that you'll attract many
different players. This happens to be the case with Tour of Duty. Tour
of Duty is a mod that places you on either the Northern Vietnamese Army
(NVA) or the United States Marine Core (USMC) each with their unique classes,
weapons, and objectives. Certain maps have objectives such as blowing
up a point, or capturing flags. While there are others that are purely
round-based play and constant repspawning. The overall pace of the game
is very fast. The graphics are beautiful, however, in order to play, it
is required that you have an OpenGL mode on your video card. The maps
for the game are very good, but there are a couple that entirely suck
ass. You'll often notice a few maps that has a slight advantage for a
certain team, while there are others that just lag too much.
The actual
gameplay of TOD is very fun. As of V1.01, there are 6 classes for the
NVA and 7 for the USMC. You have your typical riflemen who carry the AK-47,
or M-16. There's also your heavy support which includes machine gunners
for both teams, a RPG-7 for the NVA, a LAW for the USMC, and officers
for both teams. Officers provides bonuses such as increasing your accuracy,
and also look very cool. Either way, you have your typical sniper for
both teams, and then some unique classes. The USMC has a medic and M79
Grenade Launcher which sort of looks like a potato gun. On the other hand,
the NVA have a Sapper or suicide bomber that can kamikaze by holding the
right mouse button with a satchel charge. Very fun stuff indeed.
The mod isn't
too laggy, but you'll often notice drops in framerates in certain parts
of the map. Once they fix the map imbalances, and even out the classes,
then this mod will become the next Day of Defeat. Since Conflict in Nam
isn't out yet, this mod is bound to consume every gamer who has dreamed
of playing in the Vietnam War.

TIPS
- Use
a semi-automatic or single burst shot when shooting from a long range;
use the automatic burst in close range battles or when the enemy is
charging towards you.
- Try
to constantly duck when firing, it increases your accuracy.
- If the
enemy is flanking you, try to spare your ammo with single burst shots
so you don't empty a clip during the battle.
- If possible,
never jump when shooting, your accuracy goes haywire and you can get
shot back.
- If you
see a gun flare in the distance, shoot in that direction. A gun flare
signifies that the enemy is shooting at you, and you can estimate
on their position and hopefully get a kill.
- To throw
a grenade far, run forward, do a long jump (control+jump), and press
backwards while releasing the nade. Make sure you put an arch on it
to give it maximum distance. Also, try to release the nade at the
peak of your jump so it goes very far.
- At the
beginning of each map, charge to where you commonly meet the enemy
and toss nades at the choke points.
- As a
sniper, find key positions on the map that are impossible to get shot
at except by another sniper.
- When
firing RPGs and LAWs, wait until your allies die, then lure the enemy
into a choke point or alley and fire away.
- Sappers
should place trip mines around corners and on angled slopes so that
the enemy will not see them when turning or crossing a point.
- As a
sapper, always use the satchel charges to your advantage. Throw one,
and then use the second one as your kamikaze technique.
- As a
medic, never use your medkit unless you're confident the enemy isn't
around. The medkit makes an extremely loud noise, worse than that
of reloading a gun.
- There
are certain maps to rush in, and others you shouldn't. Rush in these:
cp_bravo, cp_queson, cp_fullforce, cp_northhue.
- Use
voice commands to your advantage. It's always fun to yell grenade
and then startle an enemy by charging at them.
- The
AK-47 holds 30 bullets, while the M-16 only carries 20. Utilize the
weapons to your advantage, and know when to retreat and hide. With
an AK-47, use both the automatic and single firing methods. If you
combine both shooting methods, you'll get many kills and be deadly.
With an M-16, always reload your clip even if you only fired two shots.
The M-16 also has a faster firing rate, so use it wisely.
- In cp_bravo,
never camp. You'll find your team losing more often if you hold a
position rather than putting constant pressure at choke points. Also,
use the center hallway on the USMC side as a keepsake.
- If you're
going to knife someone, it takes about four body slashes to kill them.
Make sure you pull the knife out before they hear it, otherwise you're
toast.
- Pistols
are decent weapons, but you'll find them useless unless it's a one-on-one
combat.
- Try
to spray mini machine guns rather than holding them in. Spraying guarantees
a hit and lowers the enemy's chance of hitting you.
- With
heavy machine guns, always duck and try to burst the shots. Long range
doesn't work too well, so try to move if you can.
- If there's
a sapper spot open on your team, take it. The sapper is probably one
of the most annoying classes in the game, and you're guaranteed kills.
- When
you see the enemy capture a flag, note the location, and then pick
a spot where you can ambush them. Basically, if you see someone caught
the alley, go to a corner around the alley and then rush it when you
hear them coming.
- You
can commit a custom suicide by holding the grenade down for 5 seconds.
- The
NVA sniper rifle has an aiming target when not looking in the scope.
The USMC sniper rifle doesn't. Thus, try to maintain a single position
as a USMC sniper, and constantly move around as a NVA sniper.
